Flag of truce
This original flag of truce was carried by General James Longstreet under order of General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox. Lee requested a deferment from fighting while he considered the terms of surrender offered by General Grant. This portion of a white linen dish towel was ultimately presented by General Philip Sheridan to the wife of General George Custer in appreciation of his service during the war.
