Dr. Ellen Ryan Jolly was the driving force behind the “Nuns of the Battlefield” memorial. At the turn of the 20th Century she was president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Jolly spent the better part of ten years researching each of the Catholic orders which served as nurses during the war, finding primary resources documenting the history of the Sisters service. Congressman Ambrose Kennedy championed her campaign, and the memorial was dedicated on September 30, 1924. She published her discoveries in the appropriately titled, “Nuns of the Battlefield” in 1927.
